This function has the biggest impact on fuel consumption and is provided by the onboard compressor. On standard rigs, flushing can only be implemented at maximum air speed, but on SmartROC top-hammer rigs the operator can adjust the speed of the flow from 0 to 100 %.
The airflow is adjusted with the help of an easily accessible control by the operator’s left hand. The operator can fine-tune the supply of air so that only the air that is absolutely necessary is used to flush the cuttings out of the hole. This means the engine works only as hard as it needs to, which in turn reduces fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions.
